Throughout the newspaper there are several rhetorical devices in play. In the feature article about Roger Chillingworth curing a boy from a "mysterious disease". The article brings out pathos in the reader as their emotions go out to the mother and the child. The article also creates a dramatic tension as the reader reads how the doctor saves the boy from his disease. I created this tension along with the pathos to hook the reader and even give them a sense of worry and then flood them with relief at the end when the boy is saved. An antiphrasis is also put into play in the article when the mother describes how Chillingworth works with "feverish precision".
For the opinion article, it is based off the opinion of a young boy who is thinking about Pearl and what he knows about her. The article displays ethos when he questions if the way she is treated and talked about by the adults around him. Logos are put in play when the boy begins to question if being a "spawn of the Devil" is a bad thing or not, because he thinks that if a father loves his daughter that is a good thing no matter who the father is, and that is the logic that the boy thinks is true. There are also other rhetorical devices like amplification of the word "creepy" at the beginning of the article and repetition of the phrase "spawn of the Devil". By putting all these rhetorical devices together the opinion of the boy shows another ethical and logical picture not shown before to the audience for them to consider.
The obituary of Reverend Dimmesdale picks on the emotion of the reader. The audience loves the Reverend for his remarkable speeches and in reading this they are probably sad to see him go, even after they learned that he had been a sinner as well. He begins the obituary with an emotional speech about himself and his love for the people around him. Then he gives an admittance of guilt which is meant to change the audience's emotion. He ends the obituary with a strong allusion towards the Devil in defense to his daughter. This plays with the audience's emotional state until the very end and leaves them thinking about what the Reverend said to them in the obituary.
The advertisement, like very advertisement is bright, flashy, lots of colors, shows a picture of the product, and gives all the basic information someone might need to know. The advertisement makes people think for a moment about their appearance, and then by doing so makes the audience believe that they need to buy the product to better their appearance. It also states that the gloves are made for people with "class", which also makes the audience want to buy them so they can appear to be like upper-class. The advertisement also states "Straight out of Italy" making it seem like something that is hard to get, so it creates a sense of urgency to get them while there is still a chance. These devices together will give a person multiple reasons to go out and buy the product.
The cartoon, though it looks like it's set in modern times, depicts Hester Prynne ironically complaining about the Reverend. She begins stating what she has done and why she did it, and when she states why she did it she creates an antanagoge by saying "he was so slick, but he did have those mesmerizing eyes". The phrase "mesmerizing eyes" is also an epithet as well. She ends it with sarcastically complaining how she is the one who gets in trouble and has to deal with the baby as the Reverend get's to keep his normal life. So with the combination of the sarcasm, the epithet and antanagoge the comic manages to create an ironic tone through what Hester is saying.

Reverend Dimmesdale's Obituary
Hello, my name is Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale and if you are reading this then I have long passed into either the fiery abyss of Hell, or if God permitted me, into the beautiful bliss of Heaven. I was born and raised in my beautiful homeland of England. When I moved to America, I did not know what to expect. I was greeted with warm welcomes and open arms and became part of your family. Many of you know me as a man of powerful words and a servant of God. I just want everyone to know, I loved all of you with all my heart and I am honored that my words could touch you in the most beautiful and profound way imaginable. I hope you keep them inside your soul and pass them on and don't make the same mistakes I made. I am the lover of Hester Prynne and the father of Pearl Prynne. I hid the truth from you all, and it brought a burden upon my heart unlike one I had ever felt before. In the end, if I am to die, it will be from this. I leave whatever possessions I have to my daughter and her mother. I hope you all find it in your heart to forgive her for her sins. Pearl is not the spawn of the Devil, she is my child, and unless I am the Devil in another form, I hope you can learn to love her too.
Spawn of the Devil
There she was again, walking beside her shamed mother again. She was so creepy, and weird, and creepy. Pearl, the daughter of the shamed Hester Prynne was taking a walk again. My friends and I were all out in front of shoe shop kicking the ball around when she passed by. We stopped for a moment just to stare at her. When she saw us staring she ran up to us and started yelling at us again. I grabbed my ball and me and my friends made a run for it. After we played ball and all my friends started to leave I began to think more about Pearl.
I don't really know what is wrong with her. It's not like she looks deformed or anything. Just something about the way she carries herself and acts around other people. One moment she looks innocent beyond perpetuity and the next moment the Devil himself was dancing in her eyes. It really just creeps me out. She also has no friends, but that's probably the moms fault, she was the one who made all the bad mistakes. I remember the first time I saw Pearl, I was taking a walk with my mommy. When my mom saw me staring she stopped and looked down at me and said "You see that girl, she is a mistake, a product of sin, a girl who will probably never know her father's name. Avoid talking to her, she is the spawn of the Devil, and no little boy of mine talks with a spawn of the Devil."
I thought about it, according to the Reverend and my mother, I am one of God's children. Pearl is supposed to be a spawn of the Devil, which means the Devil is her real father. But is it wrong for the Devil to have children of his own? God loves all of his children, so wouldn't the Devil love of all his children too? But then again, wasn't the Devil a bad guy? So could bad guys love their children? I thought about it for a moment. Most parents love their children, no matter what, so wouldn't the Devil end up loving his children too. I decided that even though she was a spawn of the Devil and I was a son of God, maybe it wasn't the end of the world. She has a different daddy, but he loves her too.

Roger Chillingworth Cures Boy of Mysterious Disease!
Last night our local doctor, Dr. Chillingworth performed his magic for us once again in the curing of a young Benjamin! Young Benjamin had been complaining to his mother that his stomach had been hurting the previous day, and not soon after he had become quite ill.
His mother rushed him out to the Dr. Chillingworth's cottage in the field where the Holy Reverend Dimmesdale was with the good doctor. The Reverend gave the young boy a prayer and left the doctor to cure the boy of his ailment.
The doctor began his basic treatment in an attempt to bring the boy's fever down, but after he realized his attempts were unsuccessful he began taking a more drastic approach to the boy's treatment. The boy's mother tells us how feverishly the doctor worked: "He wiped his brow and ran back and forth inside of his little cottage, grabbing herbs after herbs and mixing them with such feverish precision I began to gain hope, a man who works that hard does not fail."
No doubt about it, a man who works that hard does not simply fail. After working for nearly two hours straight the doctor finishes what seems to be some sort of medicine created by a mixture of herbs. The boy takes it, and gags at the taste, but swallows it all. Within the next hour color begins returning to his cheeks and the little boy begins to smile again. The mother is crying with happiness and thanking the tired old doctor. At the end of the day there was nothing but a sense of relief to all who knew. We managed to get a brief statement from the doctor, "I really don't know how I did that, just a bit of knowledge and a lot of luck in play."
And there you have it. Just another regular day for Roger Chillingworth. With God by his side and his knowledge of the medical world, God guided the good doctor's hands to saving young Benjamin's life!
